Netherlands Plans to Construct 1 Million Homes by 2030: Housing Minister Reveals

The Housing Minister of the Netherlands has announced plans to construct 1 million homes by 2030. Learn more about this ambitious housing target and its implications for the country's future.

A-2

The Housing Minister of the Netherlands, Hugo de Jonge, has stated that the country will need to build an additional one million homes in the ten years following 2030, even if immigration rates decline significantly. De Jonge, in an interview with De Telegraaf, mentioned that he primarily plans to focus on areas outside the Randstad region for these new housing developments. Currently, the housing construction target set by De Jonge stands at 981,000 new homes to alleviate the existing housing shortage until 2030. However, this goal appears increasingly unattainable. Interestingly, the minister also noted that the work does not end there, and the number of homes required between 2030 and 2040 may be of a similar magnitude.

To tackle this growing housing demand, Minister De Jonge aims to prioritize large-scale housing construction projects in various regions. He intends to identify potential sites in the near future. Some of the regions under consideration include the area between Groningen and Assen, extending toward Emmen, as well as the Gelderland city triangle encompassing Apeldoorn, Zutphen, and Deventer. Additionally, the Eindhoven region, Twente, and Zuid-Limburg have also been identified as potential locations for new housing initiatives. Notably, De Jonge deliberately excluded Randstad locations from this list, emphasizing the need to disperse the population rather than concentrating it in a single area.

Last week, the Economic Institute for Construction (EIB) advised De Jonge to diversify his approach and move away from solely focusing on large-scale construction projects. The EIB highlighted the difficulty of initiating such projects within the current economic climate. Instead, the institute suggested that municipalities should consider expanding their boundaries and constructing up to 50 homes on the outskirts of towns and cities, which could potentially result in the creation of around 200,000 homes within four years.

A-3

In conclusion, the Netherlands faces a substantial housing shortage that necessitates significant construction efforts to meet the growing population's demands. Minister De Jonge acknowledges the challenges and foresees the need to build an additional one million homes between 2030 and 2040. To address this issue, he plans to prioritize large-scale housing construction, exploring potential sites in various regions outside the Randstad area. However, the Economic Institute for Construction suggests a more diversified approach, advocating for smaller-scale projects in municipalities to achieve a quicker solution to the housing shortage.
