On August 24, Russia announced the reason for delaying the launch of spacecraft to the surface of the Moon.

Accordingly, several problems in the tests of the Luna-25 spacecraft have hindered the mission for the first time in decades.  Last week, the Russian space agency Roscosmos announced that this mission would be postponed to May 2022, instead of launching Luna-25 on October 1 of this year from the Vostochny cosmodrome in the Far East as originally planned.

The Luna-25 spacecraft has a mission to the South Pole of the Moon to explore the ice mines there.

This is Russia's first mission to the surface of the Moon after 45 years and the first in post-Soviet history.

Explaining the decision to delay the above, deputy director of the Lavochkin NPO Design Institute of Russia, Alexander Shirshakov, said that more time is needed to complete the tests successfully.

They encountered certain problems during the test. The safe landing system has vital importance and they are working on the Luna-25's soft landing system.

Over the past 60 years, Russia has affirmed its leading position in the field of space exploration, regularly sending astronauts to the International Space Station (ISS).

However, observers assess that Russia is competing with strong rivals such as the US and China in the race to develop space technology.

Notably, the race to return to the Moon is competing hardly when China became the first country to bring rock samples from the Moon to Earth in December 2020 since the Soviet Union's Luna-24 mission in 1976.

In 2020, Russia also lost the monopoly to conduct manned launches to the ISS when US technology billionaire Elon Musk's company Space X successfully developed reusable rocket systems, brought the astronauts of the US Space Agency (NASA) successfully landed on the ISS.

Recently, NASA has also committed to send the first woman to the Moon by 2024 within the framework of this country's Artemis program.

Although experts say that this is a difficult time for Russia as rivals emerge stronger and stronger, Roscosmos director Dmitry Rogozin still confirms that the agency is pursuing ambitious projects such as the mission to Venus, Mars or set up a space station on the Moon.
