Amsterdam builds more Senior-Friendly Homes

Amsterdam is taking proactive steps to address the growing population of older adults in the city by launching a new housing project called Lang Leven Thuisflats. With the goal of enabling seniors to live independently for a longer period of time, these flats will be specially designed and equipped to meet the needs of older residents.

The Lang Leven Thuisflats will not only be structurally adapted to accommodate the unique requirements of older adults but will also offer access to care services and group activities. A team of care and welfare workers will be available on-site to provide assistance and support to residents as needed. Additionally, the project may include an inter-generational living program, allowing students to live alongside older adults in some of the flats.

As the number of older adults in Amsterdam continues to rise, with projections indicating that a quarter of the city's residents will be 65 or older by 2040, the need for suitable housing options for seniors is becoming increasingly urgent. In response to this demographic shift, the city aims to develop at least 20 Lang Leven Thuisflats in the coming years and hopes to have 30 of these specialized homes in place by 2030.

By prioritizing the creation of housing options that cater to the needs of older adults, Amsterdam is taking a proactive approach to ensuring that its aging population can continue to live independently and comfortably in the city for years to come.
