Australia cooperates with NASA to send homemade rover to the Moon as early as 2026.
Australia is building a lunar rover, capable of taking off within the next five years. This is the first lunar exploration mission of Australia related to an agreement with the US space agency (NASA).

Based on the agreement, Australian businesses and researchers will help develop vehicles to be used for future lunar exploration missions. Australia's semi-autonomous rover will be on a mission to collect soil samples on the Moon, which is believed to contain oxygen as previously observed by NASA, for research. Scientists point out that finding an oxygen source on the Moon is crucial to establishing a long-term human presence and supporting future Mars exploration missions.
Under the agreement, NASA can send a rover to the Moon as early as 2026, if the construction process is completed in time to meet a series of conditions during development.
Previously, the Australian Government announced a budget of AUD 50 million ($35 million) for the Moon to Mars initiative, to help send rovers to these two planets.
Australia aims, by 2030, to triple the size of its domestic space technology industry, which is expected to bring $12 billion to the economy and create around 20,000 high-skill jobs.
This agreement with NASA will open a new era for Australia's space technology sector.
