The notice states that the FCC has authorized Boeing to build, deploy, and operate a constellation of satellites to provide broadband and communications services to residential and commercial customers, organizations, governments, and professions in the United States and globally.
Specifically, the FCC allows Boeing to launch 147 satellites, of which 132 are expected to be put into orbit about 600 miles (equivalent to 1,000 km) above the ground, while the remaining 15 satellites are sent to higher orbits, about 17,000-27,000 miles above the ground.
It will initially provide services to customers in the US, then expand worldwide.
Previously, Boeing's competitors had also launched satellite beam projects to provide Internet from space.
Billionaire Elon Musk's SpaceX has launched more than 1,500 satellites into orbit to build the Starlink network, while Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has a similar project called Kuiper.
