Space reported that François-Philippe Champagne - Canada's Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry - announced on May 26 that the country will develop a robot to explore the Moon and launch it in 2026.

"The robot will carry at least two scientific instruments. The mission will be to collect images, measurements and data about the Moon's surface," said Canadian Space Agency (CSA) officials.

Officials added that they will soon select two Canadian companies to develop the concept and devices of the exploration robot.

According to the plan, other Canadian instruments will also be sent to the Moon in the coming years.  For example, three commercial technologies funded by CSA's Lunar Exploration Accelerator Program, which are expected to be tested on the lunar surface in 2022, include an artificial intelligence computer from Mission Control Space Services, a panoramic camera built by Canadensys and a new planetary navigation system, was developed by NGC Aerospace.

Canada is also a key partner in NASA's crewed lunar exploration program, which aims to establish a long-term, sustainable human presence on and around the Moon by the late 2020s.  This scientist is supplying robotic arms for a space station orbiting the Moon called Gateway - a critical infrastructure of the Artemis program.
