China is developing a miniature prototype of a Mars helicopter for a future Mars reconnaissance mission.

China's National Space Science Center posted on its website on September 1 an image of the country's Mars helicopter prototype.

Mars cruise drone prototype has passed the final acceptance review on August 20.

The device is one of three projects in the technology program promoted by NSSC.  This "Mars Surface Cruise Drone" project is led by NSSC's Bian Chunjiang.

On the prototype there is a micro-spectrometer.

It is said that China's Mars helicopter prototype has an appearance similar to the Ingenuity helicopter developed by NASA for the Mars Perseverance mission.

Like NASA's Mars helicopter, the Chinese prototype has two propellers, a sensor and camera base, and four slim legs.  However, according to the photo released by the Chinese space agency, the prototype does not have a solar panel at the top like Ingenuity.

China's space agency said that the helicopter could be the next tool of the country's Mars exploration, but did not provide further details.

China landed the Mars rover Zhurong in May. The successful landing of the Zhurong rover on the red planet makes China the second country after the US to successfully land on Mars.

NASA's most advanced rover, the Perseverance, landed on the red planet in February.

Separated from the Mars rover Perseverance, the Ingenuity helicopter made its first Mars flight in April, flying about 3m above the red planet's surface, marking humanity's first helicopter flight.  on a planet other than Earth.

NASA's Mars Helicopter has made more than 10 flights over the red planet since April, with a total flight distance of more than 2km and a flight time of about 20 minutes.

China is planning its first crewed mission to Mars in 2033.
