An oil painting from 1890, the revered work is part of the Monetie Meules series (Haystacks) depicting rural life near the legendary impressionist's old house in Normandy of France. The entire collection consists of more than 25 paintings, most of which have been sold for large amounts at auctions around the world. The same family previously owned this latest work for nearly a century, bought it directly from the artist-dealer. Finally, it was auctioned in 1986 for $ 2 million, before finally getting the eye-catching 110.7 dollars at a recent auction of Sothwardsis in New York. "One of the most recognizable images in art history, Monet's 'Haystacks' series has long served as an inspiration to countless artists since its creation in the early 1890s," said August Uribe - the auction house's head of Impressionist and modern art. This figure makes the picture become one of the world's most expensive artworks, and this is also the first impressive picture to sell for more than $ 100 million. The record for the the most expensive art painting was previously held by Nymphéas en fleur after it was sold last year for $ 84.7 million. One of the iconic paintings of Claude Monet's haystack has earned a record of $ 110.7 million at an auction in New York. Monet's "Meules" was sold at Sotheby's sale of Impressionist & Modern Art Tuesday night. The auction house said it was the world auction record for artists and was the first work of Impression art to pass the $ 100 million auction mark. The 1890 painting is one of four works in Monet's highly regarded "Haystacks" series that will be auctioned in this century and is one of eight examples left in private hands. Seventeen others reside in museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Art Institute of Chicago.
