According to the latest report from Bookwire (the company that distributes more than 50,000 audio books worldwide) and research by Rüediger Wischenbart, since the pandemic broke out, book revenue in digital format (ebooks, audio books, podcasts...) have grown significantly in countries as Canada, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Mexico, Brazil and Spain.

In many international markets including Germany, Spain, UK, France, and the US, young readers are more likely to discover audio book version and podcast during the pandemic.

With the help of technology and readers' habits of finding entertainment during the epidemic season, from the beginning of the first quarter of 2020 to the end of the second quarter of 2021, ebook downloads in Germany, Austria and Switzerland increased by 14%. Audio books also saw a 32% increase in library business models and subscriptions.
According to experts' predictions, people who listen to audio books and podcasts after experiencing them often prefer them over traditional media such as paper books.
During the pandemic, ebook demand has flourished. Sales platforms are all seen new customers. The demand for reading books through screens during the epidemic season has increased significantly.
In Spain, the demand of ebooks and audio books before and during the pandemic is markedly different. After several rounds of social distancing, the closure of field bookstores has led to a notable expansion of e-commerce and ebook publishing.
There has been an overall increase in both ebook downloads and subscription sales across platforms. In 2020, the demand of audio books in Spain increased by 38% compared to before the epidemic.
In particular, in the field of educational books, many high-priced titles were sold, followed by literary novels, up at least 5% compared to the first half of 2020.
Similarly in Mexico and Brazil, educational and non-fiction books have been and are strong revenue sources from digital book formats. Readers are willing to pay more for best-selling titles.
The report also points out that while in Western Europe and the US, literature in general and crime fiction, as well as books for children and adolescents in particular, have benefited the most. On the other hand, educational books, including skill books, showed more pronounced growth in Latin America.
In addition to buy digital version and download by publishing and release unit, new business and distribution models were rapidly expanded and gained popularity.
For example, ebook and audio book subscription models or digital book lending through different platforms, including public library.
In Germany, sales of crime fiction and literature have grown during the pandemic. The adult ebook reading segment has a stable price level. Profit from 2020 is maintained in the first quarter of 2021.
Meanwhile, Canadian publishing industry is showing signs of recovery during the pandemic. Digital book downloads are up 10% from 2020 to the first half of 2021.
