The trend of foreign home buying in Spain has been on the rise in recent years, with transactions increasing significantly between 2021 and 2023. Property Registrars report that foreigners accounted for 15% of total home purchases in Spain in the last year, surpassing 87,300 transactions. This interest has continued into the first few months of this year, with foreign demand representing 14.2% of property sales between January and March.

Coastal locations, particularly along the Levante coast from the Costa Brava to Cadiz, as well as the Balearic and Canary Islands, are seeing the highest demand from foreign buyers. Over 120 locations in various towns and neighborhoods in these regions have attracted more than 50% of foreign buying interest, with some areas reaching over 70% foreign demand.

Alicante province leads the way with 30 locations where foreign demand exceeds 50%, followed by the Balearic Islands with 28 locations and Santa Cruz de Tenerife province with 23 sought-after areas. Girona, Malaga, and Las Palmas provinces also have a significant number of preferred destinations for foreigners, including the Costa Brava, the Costa del Sol, and the Canary Islands.

In terms of nationality, Germans, Swedes, and Dutch buyers are the most frequent house hunters in Spain, with Germans showing the most interest in 55 of the analyzed areas. Swedes and Dutch buyers are also prominent, particularly in Alicante, Malaga, and Granada. French buyers prefer areas in Girona, while Italians favor the Canary Islands. British buyers, although still prominent in overall home purchases in Spain, are not leading the demand in these specific locations with high foreign interest.

Demand from other European countries such as Poland, Lithuania, and Norway is also notable in specific regions across Spain. Overall, the foreign interest in buying homes in Spain remains strong, with coastal areas and popular tourist destinations attracting the most attention from international buyers.

The real estate market in Spain continues to be attractive to foreign buyers, with coastal regions and islands being the most sought-after locations. The diverse range of nationalities interested in buying homes in Spain reflects the country's appeal as a desirable destination for international property investment.
