EYSTUROY TUNNEL - THE WORLD'S FIRST UNDERSEA ROUNDABOUT IN DENMARK
A system of tunnels and roundabouts beneath North Atlantic Ocean to link the main islands of the Faroe Islands (Denmark) is scheduled for vehicle circulation on December 19.
This 11km long Eysturoy tunnel system will cut the travel time from the capital Torshavn to Runavik from 1 hour 14 minutes to only 16 minutes.

The Eysturoy tunnel network under the Faroe Islands, that will open on December 19 after more than three years of construction, was designed by engineer Tróndur Patursson with the shape likes a jellyfish.
According to Teitur Samuelsen, Estunlar's CEO, the builder of the tunnel, he raised the idea about the roundabout design with engineer Tróndur Patursson. The tunnel system represents the traditional collective dance in the Faroes, where people hold hands and dance with songs that are passed down from generation to generation.
The Eysturoy tunnel network is 187m below sea level. Director Samuelsen admitted this was once a technically difficult project.
'It is very complicated, but we have had experience building other tunnels in the Faroe Islands. Eysturoyartunnilin is the third undersea tunnel in the Faroes. Before construction began, a large amount of seismic data had been previously collected and analyzed. All the advisers have long-term experience in building undersea tunnels'' said Samuelsen.

The Faroe Islands between Iceland and Norway, an autonomous region of Denmark, is a chain of 18 large and small islands in the North Atlantic. The first tunnel under the archipelago was built in the 1960s and now has a total of 19 tunnels.
The newest tunnel is believed to be the largest infrastructure expansion project ever made by the Faroe Islands. This means that 90% of the population can move easily between islands through this undersea tunnel system.
