SpaceX signed a $2.89 billion contract with NASA to build a spaceship that will send astronauts to the moon five decades later.
On April 16 NASA announced that it gave the billionaire Elon Musk's SpaceX a $2.89 billion contract to develop a spacecraft to bring astronauts to the moon by 2024.
It is said that the fixed price contract of NASA is a big vote of trust with the billionaire Elon Musk's company, because the US space agency is also setting a landmark program to conquer the moon named Artemis on the shoulder of SpaceX.

SpaceX wins with an attempt to use the spacecraft that the company is developing in South Texas - the Starship. This spaceship is also the backbone of billionaire Elon Musk's personal goal of bringing the first humans to Mars. So far, test flights of Starship prototypes have ended with explosions, but the company is rapidly building new test vehicles.
Last year, NASA announced three different contracts for the development of the lunar lander, given to the "National Team" of SpaceX and Blue Origin.
NASA was assisting each of the partners, providing analytical support for design, subject matter and testing experts to all contractors during that period. NASA will continue to monitor closely as SpaceX continues to evolve, ensuring that the system is safe for astronauts.
Boeing is building another key element for the Artemis program: the Space Launch System, or SLS, a giant rocket designed to carry the Orion crew compartment to the moon.
That rocket will carry the astronauts into lunar orbit, then the crew will move to the Gateway space station and from there, SpaceX's Starship spacecraft will carry the astronauts to the lunar surface, according to NASA.
The US Space Agency confirmed that cost was a major factor in its decision to proceed with a contractor in the April 16 announcement.
The announcement of the Artemis contract signals that NASA is ready to put great faith in SpaceX. In recent years, the billionaire Elon Musk's company has teamed up with NASA to achieve historic achievements, most notably the crew on SpaceX's Dragon vehicles. Crew Dragon has launched the first flight to bring astronauts from outer space back to earth on US territory since 2011.
