Switzerland’s Lugano Allows Bitcoin and Tether Payments for Invoices
Lugano, Switzerland, expands its cryptocurrency payment options, enabling private individuals and companies to pay all city-issued invoices using bitcoin and Tether.
The city of Lugano has joined the ranks of canton Zug in accepting payments for taxes and other municipal services in bitcoin. This move comes as a result of an announcement made by Bitcoin Suisse, a Zug-based crypto company, on Tuesday. Previously, payments with cryptocurrencies in Lugano were only possible via the city's online portal. However, private individuals and companies can now pay all invoices issued by the city of Lugano using bitcoin and the cryptocurrency Tether, which is pegged to the US dollar.
Bitcoin Suisse has facilitated this process by introducing the use of the Swiss QR-bill, providing a fully automated solution. By scanning the QR code on the invoice, users can select the cryptocurrency of their choice using their preferred mobile wallet. This development marks a significant step forward in the integration of cryptocurrencies into everyday financial transactions, and it is expected to streamline the payment process for residents and businesses in Lugano.
This initiative follows the successful implementation of crypto payments in the city and canton of Zug, as well as the municipality of Zermatt, by Bitcoin Suisse. The company's efforts to expand the use of cryptocurrencies for municipal services reflect a growing trend in Switzerland and beyond, as digital currencies continue to gain traction in mainstream finance.
In conclusion, the acceptance of bitcoin and Tether for payments in Lugano represents a significant milestone in the adoption of cryptocurrencies for everyday transactions. This move not only provides greater convenience for residents and businesses but also demonstrates the increasing relevance of digital currencies in the traditional financial landscape.
