For a long time, people have spread the stories of sea monsters with giant tentacles that destroy various ships and kill thousands of people. Is there any monster like that in reality? Let’s discover through the article below.
The facts about giant sea monsters
It is hard to believe that the sea monster is not just a legend. In fact, there are a host of pieces of evidence showing that the sea monster in the folklores is the giant squid.
So far, scientists have discovered a lot of proofs of giant squids in all oceans around the world, such as the Northern part of the Atlantic Ocean, Gulf of Mexico, Northern part of the Pacific Ocean, Sea of Japan, Bering Sea, Hawaii, California, and in the southern oceans.
However, the giant squid is still of the most mysterious creatures as it lives in deep oceans with extreme conditions that are challenging for the scientists and divers to access. At present, we collect data about giant squid through the carcasses appearing from time to time on the beaches around the world.
And from the collected data, the giant squid has a large head, eight arms and two tentacles used for grabbing the prey. It also has a strong jaw with a shape similar to a parrot beak. As the giant squid lives in the ocean with a depth of 3000 to 6000 feet, it has huge eyes with an average size of 10 inches in diameter to detect objects in the lightless ambient.
The main food of this huge creature is other squids, fish, and shrimps. Sometimes, it is believed to attack and eat small whales. The interesting part of its hunting behavior is that it prefers waiting for the prey to appear on its own to hunting and killing the prey aggressively.
What’s about the size of this giant monster? The giant squid is one of the biggest animals on the planet. Based on the examination of 130 specimens and of beaks found inside sperm whales, the average size of the male squid is estimated at around 33 feet and 440 pounds in weight. And the female one is normally larger than the male with a length of about 43 feet and a weight of 606 pounds. Up to now, the largest squid that was found had 59 feet in length and almost one ton of weight.
