The Lufthansa Group has announced plans to bring broadband internet access to over 150 short and medium-haul aircraft, offering Wi-Fi to all passengers on European routes. This initiative will cover a range of aircraft, including the Airbus A220, A319, A320ceo, A320neo, A321ceo, and A321neo operated by Lufthansa, Austrian Airlines, and SWISS. The installation is set to commence in the fourth quarter of 2024 and is expected to be completed within two years. It is worth noting that Brussels Airlines is not part of this deal for reasons that have not been disclosed.

Passengers on Lufthansa and Austrian Airlines flights that already have internet access will now be able to enjoy unlimited free messaging. The technology, provided by Viasat, utilizes the European Aviation Network (EAN) for connectivity, which is expected to contribute to reduced fuel consumption and CO2 emissions through the use of lighter antenna technology and in-flight route optimization.
