Urbanization is not a new phenomenon. Movements of people from the rural areas to urban area have been seen since the early 1800s. As a result, the population of people living in urban areas has been increasing. Currently, more than ½ of the population of the world lives in cities. Over three billion people currently live in urban areas and this figure is estimated to increase to five billion by 2050.

The biggest problem is the fact that most of the population will occur in middle- and even low- income countries. To deal with rapid population growth and housing issues, building smaller household size is a great solution and it should be taken into consideration. However, it should be noted that young households are comprised of young persons who left their parental homes to start off their life. However, overtime, they get settled, married and bear child. As the size of their household increase over the lifestyle of household, more space becomes needful. Therefore, housing units may be small first, changes demand for flexibility.

Experts have cautioned that an increase in inequality in parts of the world can create tension and conflict. Housing development especially for people with low income has capacity for resources redistribution through creating income generation opportunities and employment. This can normally be realized by using opportunities provided by forward and backward linkages for which housing unit has been acclaimed. Addition to this, the poverty also contributes to the issue of affordability of housing. The current situation where people spend up to more than 65% of their income on housing problem is not good for the city’s social stability. Inability to pay for housing has resulted in the incidence of homelessness.

Addition to this, a major feature of the urban areas is the proliferation of informal settlements and slums. They have involved in response to the inability of the government to supply adequate housing for the population. These informal settlements and slums offer accommodation for most of the people and the first solution for new migrants. Proactive moves offered by the government will restrict the growth of informal settlements. Intervention will anticipate the city growth’s directions and then plan the layout and supply basic infrastructure before people moving in. Besides, while government does not need to involve in direct housing construction, it should offer the guidelines for city development and guarantee compliance through effective monitoring.

Besides, due to rapid urbanization, access to land for housing has become challenging. Land prices have been increasing in the urban areas due to explosive urbanization, making it unaffordable to many people. Urbanization is known as an inevitable process which was not planned for.
