The Senior Customers now Are Increasingly Shopping Online

Customers aged 50-69 are increasingly shopping online with their spending money via mobile apps. The data from website Auction showed that online shopping by senior customers have more than doubled than that five years ago.

Comparing the sales results from the first six months this year, customers in their 50s purchased online 130% more than they did 4 years ago. Customers in their 60s had an increase in their online purchases by 171%. Generally, customers in their 50s and 60s made up 27% of all of the Auction consumers in the first six months this year while their share was about 17% four years ago.

Seo Eun Hee, a member of Auction’s marketing team, said that the team saw more online purchases among consumers in their 50s and 60s via PCs and smartphones. Their increase is created due to the popularity of e-commerce market, which was mainly about young consumers in the past. Besides, Seo said that the increase in purchasing power of these senior consumers shows that e-commerce is not a channel for specific generations anymore. It is believed that younger customers are more willing to purchase online on themselves, the data provided by Auction showed that is not the case anymore.

Older shoppers were also looking for other alternatives to their home-cooked meals because the purchases of home-meal replacements and fast foods also tripled. Smartphones are a factor that helped increase the number of senior consumers purchasing online. Nowadays, there are more mobile versions of online purchasing sites and they are also simpler and easier to understand than sites on PCs.

The website WeMakePrice reported that senior is one of the four popular e-commerce trends in the first six months this year. Plus, the number of the e-commerce websites in this age group also had an increase by 2.6%. Products most purchased by older customers include laundry machines, bars of gold and fridges. This increase shows that older customers now have more trust in online purchases.
